Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Our Jigsaw Programme (Reception to Year 6)

At Sturton by Stow Primary School, we are committed to supporting our pupils to become confident, resilient and responsible individuals who are prepared for life in modern Britain. Our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is delivered through the Jigsaw programme, a comprehensive and structured scheme of learning followed by all pupils from Reception through to Year 6.

What is Jigsaw?

Jigsaw is a whole-school approach to PSHE that brings together personal, social, health and emotional learning in a structured and progressive way. The programme supports both children’s mental health and wellbeing alongside their academic development, ensuring every child feels valued, safe and supported.
At the heart of Jigsaw is the idea that children learn best when they feel a sense of belonging within a caring and nurturing environment, where respect, kindness and inclusion are central.

What Do Children Learn?

The Jigsaw programme is carefully designed to build knowledge and skills year by year. Across the school, pupils explore six key themes annually:
  • Being Me in My World – understanding rights, responsibilities and belonging
  • Celebrating Difference – respecting diversity and inclusion
  • Dreams and Goals – setting goals, resilience and aspiration
  • Healthy Me – physical and mental health, lifestyle choices
  • Relationships – building positive friendships and family relationships
  • Changing Me – understanding personal change, including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
These units are taught in an age-appropriate way, ensuring progression from early learning in Reception right through to preparing pupils for secondary school in Year 6.

Skills for Life

Through Jigsaw, children develop a range of essential life skills, including:
  • Emotional literacy and self-awareness
  • Managing feelings and building resilience
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Effective communication and teamwork
  • Respect for themselves and others
Our aim is to equip every child with the skills they need to navigate challenges positively and build healthy relationships.

A Whole-School Approach

Jigsaw is not just a weekly lesson; it is embedded across our school ethos. Assemblies, circle times and daily interactions all reinforce the Jigsaw values. The programme also supports our safeguarding and wellbeing priorities, ensuring children have opportunities to discuss feelings and concerns in a safe environment.
Each lesson includes opportunities for reflection, discussion and mindfulness, helping children to develop calmness, focus and emotional regulation.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

As part of the "Changing Me" unit, children receive age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education in line with statutory guidance. This is delivered sensitively and in partnership with parents and carers. We believe it is important for children to understand their bodies, personal boundaries and how to stay safe.
Parents and carers are informed about the content of RSE and are welcome to discuss the programme with the school.

Supporting Our Pupils

At Sturton by Stow Primary School, we recognise that every child is unique. The Jigsaw programme allows for inclusive teaching that meets diverse needs and supports all learners to succeed. Our staff adapt lessons where needed to ensure all pupils can engage meaningfully.

Working with Families

We value the important role families play in children’s personal development. We encourage parents and carers to support learning at home by discussing themes covered in school and promoting positive wellbeing.
If you would like more information about our PSHE curriculum or the Jigsaw programme, please talk to your child's class teacher.

Together, we help every child build the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to thrive now and in the future.
